Com o avanço da imunização, foi verificada queda na eficácia de algumas vacinas em grupos específicos. Estudos vêm mostrando que a proteção dos imunizantes também cai contra a variante Delta
Idosos e pessoas imunossuprimidas seriam os grupos mais beneficiados pelo reforço, pois o sistema imunológico deles, de saída, já apresenta um pouco mais de dificuldade para responder ao estímulo da vacina
Segundo a Sinovac, criadora da vacina Coronavac, uma terceira dose aumentaria os anticorpos contra a Covid-19 em cinco vezes
A Pfizer também estuda a aplicação de um "booster" seis meses após a primeira dose, e afirma que os níveis de anticorpos aumentariam de cinco a 10 vezes com um reforço
Um estudo da Universidade de Oxford aponta que uma terceira dose aumentaria as respostas imunes de anticorpos e células T, mas afirma que não há evidências sobre a necessidade do reforço
No caso da Janssen, que é dose única, a farmacêutica diz que um reforço aumentaria os anticorpos em nove vezes em um intervalo de seis a oito meses da primeira aplicação
A OMS é contra a aplicação do reforço enquanto há países que ainda não conseguiram imunizar nem os profissionais de saúde, uma vez que não há doses sobrando
Os diretores da agência internacional consideram que dar uma terceira dose é o equivalente a oferecer mais um colete salva-vidas para pessoas que já têm um enquanto milhões morrem afogados
A OMS também considera que não há estudos científicos suficientes para comprovar a necessidade de mais um reforço
O governo brasileiro liberou a aplicação da terceira dose em idosos e imunossuprimidos, e os estados estão se organizando para aplicar o reforço. A terceira dose vale para quem tomou a segunda há mais de seis meses. No caso dos imunossuprimidos, o reforço pode ser aplicado depois de 28 dias
A terceira dose aplicada no Brasil será a da vacina Pfizer, mas doses da AstraZeneca e da Janssen também poderão ser utilizadas. Não importa a fabricante usada na campanha de vacinação normal
